Who among us has not been touched by cancer? On Saturday June 3, TPW was out in full force to support one of our members in the inaugural "Give a Breath" 5km walk and fundraiser for Lung Cancer. A first for Toronto.
It was a perfect day for a walk along the Humber river in the Etienne Brule Park, and the west end of the city that we all appreciate more after spending the time there. (note to group - future Saturday morning walks in the area that has an abundance of neat restaurants and cafes along Bloor St.?)
The crowd - of all ages (and of course a few of the 4 legged kind) were in good spirits and were well rewarded after their 5 km with lots of donated food. Gift cards from various grocery stores were also won by participants - and this added to the fun and celebratory tone of the event.
Speaking of food, the early volunteers were treated to coffee and "healthy" cookies by RR. And at the end of the walk, our own foodie extraordinaire LR wowed us with her mouth watering array of petite sandwiches, asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, devilled eggs, exquisite desserts, tea and coffee all laid out in fashionable picnic style. Many of the participants enjoyed this feast, no doubt thinking that they will happily return next year for this event given how much they enjoyed the food!
And as we all know, these events require many hours of planning, coordination, commitment and logistics to ensure a successful event, and the contributions of many were evident in the success of this event. Our congratulations to BM and her husband for leading this initiative, raising funds and much needed awareness of lung cancer.
In our 16th year as TPW, our group continues to demonstrate a depth of caring, support, encouragement and wisdom - along with our talents - to each other and our larger community. How blessed we are.
