Mr. Rogers Was Right!

Mr. Rogers was right. We need to look at the helpers. With so much that is
terrifying, so many scandals, and so much suffering in the world at the moment (is
it more than ever? It often feels like it) we must not avert our eyes. But we can
choose where to look.
In Turkey and Syria after the earth and buildings shattered, we can see people from
all over the world rushing to the rescue. No, not many people will be save, but we
can cry with relief when a child is pulled from the rubble.
Trees that we love and need are threatened in our city, but there are people fighting
to save them. Even if those trees disappear, we know that there are people who
care – and will likely plant more. We won’t see them grow tall in our lifetime, but
tree planting is not something we do selfishly. Like many of the things worth
doing, like appreciating one another, we know that we are setting our feet on a path
for others we will never know. As a Hebrew saying tells us, “You are not obligated
to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.” In honour of those
who continue the work that others began, please take a moment to enjoy the
sunlight.
