Being Brave Together

I was at a conference the week before last where the organizers talked about the event being a 'brave place' , meaning that all participants should work to ensure everyone felt welcomed, included, respected and free to share experiences and ideas without fear of criticism, harassment, or any other emotional or physical harm.

I realized that that is what TPW is to me - and I want it to always be that. We can't guarantee a 'safe place' (I think we have all taken a tumble or two) but we can continue to practice and strengthen being a brave one.

I like to think we bring our best selves out to our walks and events. I have seen wonderful examples of compassion, caring and empathy that I try to learn from. One of the marvels of walking long distances together is the ability to share our life stories over time.  Having someone really listen to you and offer their experiences in turn is priceless. I also love the times when comfortable silence is what someone needs. It is so important for us to try and truly listen to each other, both with our ears and our hearts, so we can ensure that TPW remains that brave space we all treasure.

We had a very productive annual business meeting (the first one since the pandemic closed us down three years ago) with 20 attending.  For those who missed it, we will be sending around some of the highlights. It did remind me of the original meeting we had so many years ago. After that one, I thought to myself we would be lucky to keep the group together for a couple of years - boy was I wrong (and happily so!).

This is my farewell blog as a regular contributor - thank you B D-L for taking over. The first blog I wrote for TPW was Feb. 14/2009 so, almost exactly 14 years later, I think I may be out of things to say (but reserve the right to come back as a guest from time-to-time!).
