Brickworks Ho! (BY DANIELLE)

What a beautiful and resilient city we live in! On Saturday a group of TPW walkers, led
by some experienced and intrepid members, walked through the cemetery to the ravine
trail that ends at the Toronto Brickworks. There were definite signs of the severe
flooding Toronto recently experienced: mudslides and rock falls, a wall tumbled down,
and trees upturned. But the path was lush with greenery and filled with signs of life –
including one that explained that goats were being used to control the vegetation.
When we arrived at the café, there was another sign. At hip height, we found a line
showing where the flood waters had reached only a few weeks before. However, the
café was clean and ready to serve, and the lineup for coffee and delicious blueberry
scones was undeterred.
After our lovely break and with great confidence, the experienced and intrepid walkers
found our way back up the ravine (definitely steeper than when we had descended) to
go home to find out how Canada’s athletes were doing as the 2024 Olympics wound up.
Watching the marathon runners wind their way through the beautiful Paris streets made
some of us recall that we too get to explore and enjoy our own lovely city on foot. We
may not hold world’s records but we are indomitable in our determination to appreciate
our very own “city in a park” – and its blueberry scones too.
