I did it again. I planted flowers way too early, and I cleaned the dead leaves off my garden too. Every year I say I will wait until May and every year, I don’t. How can you let those poor crocuses, daffodils and tulips, not to mention the scilla and grape hyacinths struggle under their heavy winter blanket when all they want to do is see the sun? Those tiny green shoots trying to pierce through the leaf mold get me every time. Once I see a few bees and flying critters out and a few snails beginning to move, I think I am in the clear. I am sure that my more careful neighbours will protect the pollinators better than I have, but honestly, it is all about the flowers.
And pansies! If they can survive under snow, surely they can make it through the rest of April in pots in my garden. I can’t resist their happy faces smiling up at everyone who walks by. The real problem, of course, is deciding WHICH pansies. Do I get my favourite colour or buy all the colours I can find? You know what I mean. When you pass a flower stand or go to the garden store, your purse says, just buy what you came for, but your heart says buy everything you see!
