It was a much colder morning than I had
thought it would be so while I wore a warm sweater and jacket, I hadn’t thought
about wearing long underwear under my thin exercise pants and I began to regret
that decision as soon as I arrived at the cemetery to meet the others. It was cold, damp and grey, a monochromatic
landscape, with a wind chill of -11 and soon it would start to snow! But that wasn’t the worst of it – it turned
out to be icy too.
After Nicole led us through a quick warm up
we headed into the cemetery walking briskly in order to stay warm and breaking
into smaller groups as individuals found their pace. We came across icy patches every now then
which were just frequent enough to be worrisome. We all slowed down trying to be as careful as
possible. Most of us decided we would
only do once around – it was too cold and too icy to be any fun walking at
all. So after making it safely back to
the entrance we made a dash to the restaurant and a hot breakfast and coffee.
What we didn’t know was that Nicole and Diane (who were in front) had decided
to go around a second time and it wasn’t until they joined the rest of us at
breakfast that we found out that they had gotten lost and had to ask a man
walking a dog how to get out of the cemetery but that also Diane had fallen,
hitting her head. We all hope she hasn’t
experienced any repercussions from it.
