A small group convened at 8AM in High
Park. Many TPW members are either racing or volunteering at the Women’s Half Marathon on Sunday. Some were also busy volunteering at the Start2Finish 5k race on Saturday.
The
distance for Saturday was 13 kilometres – that translates as once around the
park and to the second set of steps at Ontario Place and back. Ela and Barbara decided on a 5 kilometre hike
through the park instead.
As the rest of us set off, we ran into
Susan on the way into the park on her bicycle.
In no time, it seemed, she had caught up with us. Our hike up the zoo hill was slowed by the
attraction of new-borns; a baby yak and
a baby bison looked impossibly soft.
That led to a conversation about the fund to preserve the zoo. Phillpa and Sherry noted the small amount
left to match the Honey Family Foundation donation of $50,000.00 by June
15. They both felt that, as users of the
park, they would like to contribute. If
you would like to, as well, click for the website for donations Using the website is an easy process.
Our breakfast entertainment was watching
birds establish ownership of a slice of ham that one of them had stolen from a
plate and left on the roof of the' ice-cream' shed. Smaller birds were quickly intimidated. A robin took a strip of the meat and flew
off. Finally a large sea gull claimed the
prize.
If you’d like to feel good about your
decision to make walking your exercise of choice, I recommend the youtube video by
Dr. Mike Evans of St. Michaels Hospital called 23.5 hours.
In addition to extolling the virtues of
walking, he also reminds us of the importance of strong social networks for our
health. Membership in the TPW fills both
of those health needs!
